The game kicked off with Mylik Mitchell taking the reins as starting quarterback for the first time as a member of the Skulls. With both teams hungry for victory, Tucson aimed to turn the tide in their favor, despite facing an overall series deficit of 5-4 in favor of Northern Arizona.
The first quarter set the tone for the intense battle ahead, with the Wranglers drawing first blood courtesy of a touchdown connection from NAZ QB Josh Jones to wideout Justin Manningweather. However, Mitchell showcased his resilience, leading the Skulls on a spirited drive that culminated in a touchdown, putting Tucson ahead 7-6 by the end of the quarter.
Quarter two unfolded with a flurry of scoring as both teams exchanged touchdowns, with Mitchell orchestrating impressive drives for the Skulls. The quarter had been action-packed with back-to-back touchdowns from both teams. It seemed like Mylik Mitchell was setting a trend as it was NAZ QB Josh Jones' turn to run for another touchdown. Mitchell followed that up by finding the end zone yet again on the ground with less than 30 seconds in the half. Despite his heroics, Northern Arizona managed to maintain a slight edge, heading into halftime with a 32-28 lead.
As the third quarter commenced, Head Coach Billy Back made it a point of emphasis for his team to step it up defensively. In addition, the Wranglers finally dug their heels in on the defensive side of the ball as well. As a result, both defenses tightened their grip, resulting in a brief stalemate on the scoreboard. However, this changed when Wranglers quarterback Josh Jones found McCorker for his 3rd touchdown of the night. Although the Skulls faced adversity, Mitchell continued to shine, adding to his tally of touchdowns on the evening. The Skulls fought valiantly, narrowing the gap and setting the stage for a thrilling final quarter.
With tensions mounting and the game hanging in the balance, Tucson staged a late comeback, fueled by Mitchell's dynamic playmaking. With just minutes remaining, the Skulls found themselves within striking distance, tantalizingly close to seizing victory.
On the final play of the game, Mitchell unfortunately fumbled the snap, but he was able to recover in time to throw a deep pass toward the goal line. Despite his efforts to save the play, the Sugar Skulls' fate was sealed when the ball was intercepted, leading to a disappointing end to the game.
The Indoor War continues as the Tucson Sugar Skulls fall to the Wranglers in a highly back-and-forth game. For a final score of 54-48 in favor of the Wranglers.
