Tucson Sugar Skulls Secure Win Over Rival Arizona Rattlers
Tucson, AZ – The Tucson Sugar Skulls emerged victorious against in-state rivals the Arizona Rattlers, with a final score of 35-28. In a fast-paced matchup, the Sugar Skulls proved their continued commitment and displayed incredible defensive strength alongside offensive stability.
A Rocky Start
The Arizona Rattlers opened with the ball and managed to break through with an early touchdown despite a strong defensive effort from Tucson. Tucson’s offense struggled to establish its rhythm against Arizona’s unrelenting defense and was ultimately unable to secure any points in the first quarter. Arizona secured two interceptions and scored another touchdown before the quarter ended, widening its lead to 14-0.
The second quarter saw Tucson with increased momentum, its defense working hard to limit Arizona’s opportunity to score. Tucson was able to put points on the board after kicker Ben Woodard secured a field goal, bringing the score to 7-3. The Skull’s defense was reinvigorated and successfully prevented Arizona from scoring any points in the second quarter. Tucson recovered a fumbled ball and converted it into a touchdown, secured by wide receiver Jaron Waters, and Tucson ended the quarter trailing by less than a touchdown behind Arizona, the score 14-10.
Second Half Redemption
Tucson opened the second half with a touchdown scored by running back Brandon Mackey, bringing Tucson into the lead, 17-14. Arizona attempted to respond, but Tucson defensive back Aaron Jackson snagged an interception that resulted in a field goal for the Skulls, increasing Tucson’s lead to 20-17. Despite the defensive effort put up by Tucson, Arizona scored another touchdown, narrowly regaining the lead 21-20.
The final quarter proved to be the most crucial for Tucson. Tucson opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown completed by Brandon Mackey, placing them back in the lead, 27-21. Arizona was quick to respond, securing a touchdown to regain the lead, 28-27. Arizona snagged an interception from the Skulls, but Tucson defensive back Ahmad Lyons returned the favor with an interception of his own. The crowd in the Boneyard got loud as Brandon Mackey secured a touchdown for the Skulls, bringing the Skulls back into the lead. Kicker Ben Woodard increased the lead with a deuce, bringing the score to 35-28. Arizona attempted to respond in the final moments of the game, but Aaron Jackson secured an interception that slashed Arizona’s chances, and Tucson emerged victorious with a final score of 35-28.
