Prescott, AZ – After a tension-filled road matchup against the Northern Arizona Wranglers, the Tucson Sugar Skulls were narrowly defeated in the final moments of the game, with a final score of 51-49. The matchup proved unpredictable as both teams fought hard for the lead, with the Wranglers ultimately breaking through with a win.
Tension-Heavy Opening
The matchup opened with energy as Northern Arizona scored a deuce, putting them in the lead in the opening moments, 2-0. The Skulls did not stand by, instead showing off a dominant running game as they worked hard to put pressure on the Wranglers. TD Ayo-Durojaiye secured another touchdown for the Skulls, but Northern Arizona again responded with a touchdown, bringing the score to 16-15 with Tucson leading by a single point. The remainder of the first quarter proved tense, as the rivalry between the teams was evident on the field with a series of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Northern Arizona secured an interception in the final minutes of the quarter that resulted in a touchdown, putting the Wranglers in the lead, 21-16.
Tucson opened the scoring in the second quarter with a touchdown secured by wide receiver Terrell Brown, putting the Skulls back in the lead, 23-21. Before Northern Arizona could respond, Tucson secured a turnover and converted it into another touchdown, building the lead to 29-21. Northern Arizona snagged a touchdown, but Tucson held the lead, the score 29-27 entering the second half.
A Disappointing Turn of Events
Tucson defensive back Bri’On Murray opened the third quarter with an interception, but the Skulls' offense was unsuccessful in securing any points. The third quarter was low scoring, with both teams struggling to capitalize. Brandon Mackey continued to prove key as he rushed the ball to provide an opportunity for a Tucson touchdown. Eventually, Tucson landed a touchdown scored by wide receiver Jaivian Lofton, but Northern Arizona quickly scored a touchdown in response, bringing the score to 35-34 at the end of the third quarter, Tucson narrowly leading by one point.
The final quarter proved to be crucial for Northern Arizona as they worked to sneak back into the lead. Tucson opened the fourth quarter with two touchdowns, one of which was secured on an interception by defensive back Malik Sonnier. When Sonnier was tackled in the end zone, defensive lineman Isaac Anderson recovered the ball to ensure Tucson secured another touchdown. These plays left the Wranglers trailing Tucson by 15 points, the score 49-34. Northern Arizona began its climb back into the lead with a field goal, then proceeded to secure a touchdown from an interception, bringing the score to 49-43, with Northern Arizona behind by a mere 7 points. The Wranglers scored a deuce and a second touchdown from another interception, bringing them into the lead, 51-49. Before Tucson could respond, Northern Arizona secured a game-ending interception, officially preventing a comeback from the Skulls. The Wranglers emerged victorious with a final score of 51-49.
